The concept is inspired by the growing availability of organic food options in supermarkets and vegetarian/vegan choices on menus. Just as we value diversity in our diets, why not offer a diversity of software design mindsets and lifestyles, promoting alternative ways of interacting with the environment?
The term "organic software" has been previously used by Keth (2022) in a blog post, where it refers to software not funded in a way that prioritises chasing funding rounds or being acquired. I'm inspired by his metaphor of growing software like on a bio-farm, and the mindset behind it, which challenges the mainstream focus on financial profit, user acquisition, and fast growth. Specifically for my project, "organic" signifies prioritising interactions with natural and human elements over artificial ones, such as screens and software.
This approach may not appeal to everyone, but it provides an option for those who value it and may attract others to try it from time to time. I'm not advocating for the complete replacement of existing software; rather, I propose the availability of a toggle that allows users to experiment with different lifestyles.
